Pastor Steven

Steven Simpson (Pastor)

Pastor Steven Simpson grew up on a small farm in Upstate New York. His family actively participated in the ministry of the First Congregational Church (UCC) of Greene, NY where he worshipped and where he and his sister went to Sunday School, Confirmation classes, and youth group. His parents (who are still active members there) have served on various boards over the years and his mother has consistently been a part of the music ministry of the church, singing in the choir and starting and directing a hand bell choir in the church in the 1990s.

Though he had a solid foundation in the faith and in the church, it wasn't until he became involved with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship at Colgate University that he had a personal encounter with Jesus. Steven became a Bible study leader, a song leader, and, during his senior year, the president of the fellowship. Through those experiences he came to recognize that God was calling him into ordained pastoral ministry.

Steven went on to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (near Boston) serving a local church as youth pastor until he graduated, was ordained, and was called to serve as an associate pastor in a UCC congregation in California. Four years later he received another call to pastor a church in Hawaii. He spent six wonderful years there, but in 2000 moved back to Upstate New York to be closer to family and served as an interim pastor in a UCC church near Albany, NY for a year and a half.

In 2002 Pastor Steven was called to St. John's UCC in Genoa where he served as pastor and teacher for five and a half years. Before coming to St. Paul's UCC in Amityville he also served briefly as an interim pastor at Zion UCC in Fireside and St. John's UCC in Elmore, both in Northwest Ohio.

Pastor Steven is married to Shannon, who enjoys being a full-time wife and mother. He has two teen-age step-children, Joey and Jenna, who spend the school year in Upstate New York, but are part of the Simpson household during the summer and during school vacations. The Simpsons also have two dogs, Levi, a chocolate Labrador retriever, and Statia, a black lab-beagle mix.

In his final year of doctoral studies at Winebrenner Theological Seminary (Findlay, Ohio), Pastor Steven is working on a thesis which explores ways that pastoral care is offered through preaching and worship. His thesis will examine the close relationship between a pastor's ministry as a worship-leader and preacher and his or her ministry of pastoral care (living and expressing God's presence in all aspects of life).

Pastor Steven's passions include leading worship, preaching, and teaching God's Word. His personal interests include song-writing, salsa dancing, biking, and gardening.

Pastor Steven can be reached at the church office at (610) 689-9364 and at (610) 689-5741 at home. His email address is pastorstevensimpson@gmail.com. You can see some of his songs here.
